Di era kemajuan teknologi yang pesat, seni fotografi telah menjadi semakin mudah diakses oleh berbagai kalangan, dari amatir hingga profesional. Memahami inti dari fotografi melibatkan penelusuran etimologinya: "foto" berasal dari cahaya dan "grafi" dari menulis atau menggambar. Oleh karena itu, fotografi, dalam arti harfiahnya, merupakan seni menulis atau menggambar dengan cahaya. Hal ini mengimplikasikan bahwa cahaya merupakan elemen paling krusial dalam seni fotografi. Prinsip fundamentalnya terletak dalam pengelolaan cahaya dengan bantuan refraksi untuk mencetak gambar pada media penangkap cahaya.

 

Pada intinya, tujuan dan esensi fotografi terletak pada komunikasi. Sebuah foto dianggap sebagai sarana komunikasi ketika subjek yang digambarkan menjadi perantara untuk menyampaikan pesan atau gagasan kepada penontonnya, memupuk pemahaman dan hubungan makna. Dalam hal ini, sebuah foto tidak hanya memiliki utilitas fungsional tetapi juga berperan sebagai alat yang digunakan dalam proses komunikasi pesan atau gagasan penciptanya.

Dunia fotografi mencakup beragam genre dan gaya, melayani berbagai tujuan dan minat. Beberapa jenis umum meliputi:

 

Jurnalisme Foto: Sebuah bentuk khusus jurnalisme yang menggunakan gambar untuk menceritakan berita.

Fotografi Still Life: Menangkap objek tak bernyawa secara artistik menggunakan cahaya dan berbagai teknik, termasuk fotografi makro untuk objek kecil.
